Show or Hide the Perspective Grid in Illustrator

S

Help! My Illustrator page is messed up with a strange vortex of orange, green and blue.

Sometimes we inadvertently hit a key command or do something that triggers a change on our screens and we don’t know how to get rid of it. A fairly common issue, especially that new users to Illustrator run into, is accidentally turning on the Perspective Grid.

If you’re viewing a gridded “vortex” of green, blue and orange that overlays your Illustrator design, then you likely have your Show Perspective Grid active.

Another way to tell that you’ve turned on your perspective grid is if you see this icon floating on your screen or artboard.

This little icon is deceptive, because the white x on the left side looks like you can click it to exit or close it, but really I think it is meant to show where the perspective grid is anchored and has nothing to do with hiding or closing the grid.

The Fix

If you’re seeing either this grid or perspective grid icon, don’t worry, this view is easy to change; this issue is easy to fix. You can hide the visibility of this grid by using a key command or via the Illustrator main menu.

Mac Key Command

The visibility of showing your perspective grid is turned on and off by the Mac key command of Shift + Command + I.

Illustrator Menu Selection

From your Illustrator Menu, choose View > Perspective Grid > Show Grid or View > Perspective Grid > Hide Grid to show or hide this grid.

Ta da! Your Illustrator document should now be back to normal.

Video of How to Hide the Perspective Grid in Illustrator

Hello Illustrator users.

Today I’m going to show you how to fix something that happens typically

by accident

especially if you’re not trying to design

using a perspective grid. All right,

so there’s a key command that especially new users will accidentally hit sometimes

and it is shift + command

I’m not an illustrator. Okay, here we go.

Shift + command + i. Alright,

so, what this does is bring up a perspective grid.

And so you’re going to be designing and then all of a sudden you’re

gonna see this, what some people describe as a vortex,

they have green lines, orange lines, blue lines,

what is this? You can’t get it to move.

You’ll find that there’s this little indicator,

you think there’s a there’s an X, so you try to click the X,

it doesn’t close. You click control or right click,

you’re like looking, how do I get rid of this?

Nothing there. You right click on the actual grid that you’re

seeing, nothing there. And so most people get frustrated and

they just try to ignore it, but they can never get it to move

and they can never get it to go away. Alright,

so what this really is. . . is under View >

Perspective Grid.

And you can see there is this key command, so it’s the shift + command + I

that makes it visible and

go away. So you can always use your

key command, but from the menu,

view > perspective grid,

you can click hide, and that will make it go away.

So unless you’re specifically seeking out the perspective grid,

you’re almost never going to come in and say perspective grid > show grid,

but you may accidentally hit that shift + command + I

keyboard command and pop up this perspective grid in

Illustrator. So if you’re seeing it and you’re thinking what in the world is

this and how do I get rid of it,

you can use your key command, or you can go to view,

perspective grid, hide. And see your design the

way you intended. Alright, I hope this tip helps.
