Mandatory phone number for international orders in Shopify

M

Today, I was working on a no plugin, no custom script option for soliciting phone numbers on International orders to help with delivery.

Although not perfect, I was able to use default options to display the phone field and change the text to notify International users that they should provide their phone numbers.

Please note, in this solution, the logic does not actually require this field to be completed. Instead, the field is optional and the verbiage requests that International shoppers provide their phone number. However, you can select REQUIRED from the radio button options and make the phone number Mandatory.

How to add the phone number field to the Shopify Checkout

In Settings > Checkout > Customer Information Block, there are radio button option settings. To include a phone number field in your checkout field, you’ll be updating the Shipping address phone number setting. Choose Optional from the radio buttons.

Change the wording of the Phone Number field on the Shopify Checkout

In addition to turning on the Shipping address phone number, you can change the text to read something like, “Phone (Required for Customs on Int. Orders)” or “Phone (Required for Int. Orders)” — which fits best on both mobile and desktop views.

To make this change to to Online Store and use your horizontal ellipse to Edit Default Theme Content. Type “phone” in the search field and then look for “Optional Phone Label.” This is where you change the phone label text.

Note that you can also update your Phone Tooltip to tell International customers how customs require a phone number.

How to add a phone field in Shopify and change the wording so International customers add their phone number

Hi Shopify users. Today I’m going to address a question of how do you require a phone number in Shopify just for international orders? So without adding a plugin, here’s the options that you have. When you are in your settings and you come to check out, if you scroll down, this is the customer information. And you have the option of saying your shipping address phone number is either required, optional, or is not included as a field. So by clicking optional, that will give your users the option of putting in the phone number, which will probably help you convert in the United States, where someone is less likely to put in a phone number, but includes the field. Because for international customs, your shipping will likely be returned, especially in the EU, if you do not have a phone number. So, by making it optional, if you see the checkout here, right now, you see no phone number. If I make it optional and I save, right? Let’s make sure I have that now. Then I will have phone number optional. And what you see is this tiny label. And we can actually edit that label to be more specific for someone international. So, if you come in to online store, and then use your horizontal ellipse, and say edit default theme content. You’re going to be given this theme content. And you can actually search phone. And you can see this is the optional phone label. So you can change what it says here. So perhaps, I’ve prepared this. Perhaps you would put phone required for customs on international orders. So now if you say save. And you come into preview what your checkout page looks like. You’ll see that it says phone required for customs on international orders. And if I go to the mobile view, it’s a little bit on- it’s a little overlapping. So required on- For international orders might be a better fit, required for international customs. So you might want to think about what fits there best. So required for, let’s see, international. Let’s Save Okay. Refresh and see what it looks like. And if we look at mobile view, it’s still, so maybe we do want to do required for INT period orders, and that that’s going to be the best fit. in all views. So this doesn’t actually make it required, right? But it does indicate to users that it’s required, but it doesn’t force it. Someone could leave that blank and not put it in. However, this is a free fix that allows for at least showing the phone field and hinting to international customers that they need to do this and if they do not feel like they then there’s still that manual step of reaching out before you ship to go ahead and get their phone numbers. So I hope this solution, helps you see how you can do it without needing to add custom script or adding a custom plugin. Alright, good luck!
